Private gap funding

Private student loans—after the federal path is clear.

A private loan can help close a school-certified gap, but its credit rules, repayment terms, and protections differ from federal aid.

What a private student loan is

Private student loans are issued by banks, credit unions, state agencies, and online lenders. Eligibility and pricing usually depend on creditworthiness, income, program or school eligibility, and often a cosigner.

When families usually consider one

A private loan is generally a gap-funding option after scholarships, grants, work-study, savings, school payment plans, and available federal loans have been reviewed. Borrow only the amount the school can certify and that the household can reasonably repay.

Compare more than the advertised rate

  • APR and whether the rate is fixed or variable.
  • Origination, late, and prepayment fees.
  • In-school payment choices and when full repayment begins.
  • Term length, monthly payment, and total repayment.
  • Cosigner responsibility and release requirements.
  • Forbearance, deferment, discharge, and difficult-day support.
  • School, program, citizenship, enrollment, and borrowing limits.
An advertised rate is not your offer.

The provider determines eligibility and personalized terms. A longer term can lower the payment while increasing total interest.

Fixed versus variable rates

A fixed rate does not change during the loan term. A variable rate can rise or fall with its benchmark, which means the payment and total cost can change. Model both the starting payment and the risk of a higher future payment.

The application handoff

College Loan Finder helps organize public product information and sends visitors to the authorized provider or marketplace. We do not request an SSN, bank login, or full credit application in our comparison tools.
